There are countless examples of people, technology, organizations and industries that have failed to evolve over time and have, as a result, become obsolete. Ask Jeeves fell to Google, Blockbuster to Netflix, Myspace to Facebook and so on and so on.
Evolve or become extinct.
In a recent webinar hosted by the Business Transformation Network, Sevenstep (Recruitment Process Outsourcing) Executive Director Tom Trewick detailed the importance of talent acquisition as the catalyst for transformation in any organization.
“It ensures that companies remain current, that they can compete – and dominate – in their sector,” said Trewick. “Transformation in the TA function in this regard is not a nice to have, it is a business imperative.”
Market conditions as a result of the coronavirus are a prime example of the type of volatility TA must be equipped to respond to.
“A failure to plan is a plan to fail.”
In TA as well as in RPO, sometimes the act of planning matters more than the plan itself. To prepare the organization for volatility and to avoid the critical mistake of being caught flat footed, Tom recommends taking a page out of the British Royal Marines’ Land Warfare School Aide Memoire and asking a variation of the following 7 questions:
- What is the situation and how does it affect me?
- What have I been told to do and why?
- What effects do I need to achieve and what direction must I give in order to develop my plan?
- Where can I best accomplish each action/effect?
- What resources do I need to accomplish each action/effect?
- When and where do the actions take place in relation to each other?
- What control measures do I need to impose?
Act swiftly. Adapt as needed.
In order to measure effectively, the transformation lifecycle – or, discover, architect, test and train, stabilize and optimize – should be time-bound, but it should also be ongoing and iterative.
Be thoughtful but avoid over customization. If there are too many meetings or checkpoints, it will delay transformation. Time and time again, organizations get too caught up in the how when they should just get started. Don’t confuse things; minimize the number of steps and take advantage of what you already have.
